ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes the physical ability selection testing methodologies of this mid-western law enforcement agency. It focuses on the adverse impact and job relatedness of the test. The chapter provides documentation of such an approach, while at the same time demonstrating the adverse impact of the irrelevant test on females. Large numbers of police agencies are experiencing legal challenges to their physical ability test. Studies of physical ability tests have come to the conclusion that such tests favor male applicants. Hogan and Campbell both noted that physical ability testing introduces potential equal employment liabilities and such tests are likely to adversely affect female police officer applicants. Hogan and Quigley noted a number of important lawsuits which focused on the adverse impact and job relatedness of the physical ability test. Some police agencies have begun to conduct content analysis on their physical ability tests.
