ABSTRACT

This chapter intends to provide a relatively comprehensive portrayal of China’s unemployment and labor market development, which will then facilitate a better understanding of the necessity as well as the impacts of China’s urbanization. To this end, the chapter reviews three measures of unemployment rate in China, identifies the sources of China’s unemployment, analyzes characteristics of Chinese labor market practice, and examines the prospect of China’s labor market development, especially in light of China’s WTO entry. Policy recommendations are made in the final section together with concluding remarks.
