ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to give an introduction to the most important developments, plans and future needs which appeared in Hungary along the fifth European transport corridor during the 1990s. Improvements in the field can be classified into two different groups: link development and conjunction point development. The next section provides a 'virtual trip' along the Hungarian section of the fifth European transport corridor. The whole length of the corridor is approximately 2,800 km, of which the Hungarian railway section is 1,040 km. The Budapest Intermodal Logistic Centre will be the largest logistics centre in Hungary, its full capacity is planned for the transfer of more than 150,000 TEU annually. From the viewpoint of the accession countries, attention is drawn to the infrastructure developments in close connection with the logistic services in order to make potential investors aware of profitable regions of Hungary.
