ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the manner in which attorneys use rights discourse to challenge gender inequality in the workplace, and demonstrates that even those trained in the law will rely on nonexistent legal remedies to challenge perceived discrimination. It examines whether attorneys might be able to call upon generalized notions of legal rights in order to mobilize individuals to pressure for change within law firm practices, forcing a rearticulation of gender identities and relationships within the legal practice. The chapter explores how the Internet community allows attorneys to assert claims to 'legal rights', as well as possible methods of instigating change through appeals to legal rights. It presents the gender inequality in the legal practice and discusses different means of using the law to challenge existing inequalities. The chapter explores the gender breakdown of participants in the Greedy Associates community. It also explores the use of legal discourse to challenge working conditions generally, as well as gender discrimination in particular.
