ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses more specifically on the event of migration, including more specific discussion of the value of HDSS data for understanding the relation of migration to livelihoods and to health. Central to the management of a demographic surveillance system is a proper understanding of the migratory behaviour of the population. If the objective of the surveillance system is to ensure that all are accounted for in the surveillance, migration may be seen as a problem to be resolved. Consider migration and livelihoods. The decision of a person to migrate is likely to have a significant impact on the livelihood of the original family. These observations also point to some unrealized opportunities and challenges for Health Demographic Surveillance System and their advocates. Processes of social change and demographic selection influence health and socioeconomic outcomes in origin and destination.
