ABSTRACT

The population boom experienced in Vietnam during the 1970s to the early 1990s with a growth rate of about two percent per year remarkably influenced the living conditions in rural regions. Each year the Vietnamese population was growing by 1.2 million on average, resulting in about 900,000 to 1.2 million young people entering the labour force every year during 1979-1999. Bavi is a rural district of Ha Tay province lit northern Vietnam, 60 km west of Hanoi. The climate is typical for northern Vietnam, with a monsoon tropical climate: a wet season with high temperatures, heavy rainfall and storms and a dry season with generally lower temperatures but hot, dry winds for about a month before the rains start. The relationship between parent’s out-migration and morbidity of their children, a logistic model was estimated with 'sickness episode' as the dependent variable and out-migration, household economic level and occupation of the father and mother as independent variables corrected for age.
