ABSTRACT

The issues of organization and command control, the way armies are organized, have an important impact on warfare, and therefore, they need more attention than they have received in the study of military history. The creation of army corps in Europe during the Napoleonic wars had a decisive impact on the conduct of operations as field armies were organized into corps and helped ensure that cavalry, infantry, and artillery would be used in an effective coordinated manner. The war that broke out in the spring of 1861 was far different from the previous wars of the United States, Except for the War of American Independence, the Great Republic had never engaged in a struggle for its existence. The Confederate army operating in northern Virginia took the lead in developing a corps structure in the Civil War. The Army of the Cumberland fought with its wings and center organization at the Battle of Stones River.
