ABSTRACT

This chapter describes how successfully the Greek authorities are addressing the issues in the light of new challenges that confront Greece, as a result of participation in the European Monetary Union and the use of EURO from January 1st, 2002. The required appropriate vocational guidance should be closely correlated to the requirements of the labour market, and both the young people and unemployed adults should be guided towards the required training and re-training which will provide them with the skills in demand. In spite of the progress made in the middle 1980s, the Greek Government and the European Commission thought that there were many problems requiring short-term and long-term solutions, especially in the regional labour markets of Greece. The economic and social environment in Greece suggests that present human resource development strategy needs to be extended to get them committed to life-long learning and increased flexibility in the workplace, both for new and re-entering workers and for workers approaching retirement.
