ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines the context in which the theological mind was constructed so that we might share a conversation around the themes that have emerged. The theological enterprise is an ongoing conversation between contemporary faith communities, the biblical texts and the history of their interpretation, and the context in which we live. On the day that the new democratic South Africa was inaugurated, with Nelson Mandela as its first President, the sense of freedom was palpable. Knowing that the arts had played an important role in our liberation from apartheid, and that they were crucial for the renewal and flourishing of the new South Africa, also led to reflect on the transforming power of art in relation to Christianity. Theology had become a conversation not only with other theologians or the Christian tradition, but with many others committed to the search for truth, the struggle for justice, and the affirmation of our common humanity.
