ABSTRACT

Harry Williams, in a characteristic preface to Robin Green's Only Connect has written: Christian writers have often spoken of our humanity being taken up into God. It is dangerous to suggest at the consecration of a bishop of Oxford, bishop not least of St Aldate's and St Ebbe's, that he has a part to play in the atonement; but it would only be more dangerous to suggest he has no part to play in it. The head that once was crowned with thorns is crowned with glory now. Ascension Day is a feast of glory, and a most marvellous day for consecration, Richard Harries. The hands that will soon be laid upon Richard - 'only connect' - will say in what we call 'body language' that 'He who ascended is the same also as He who descended - that He might fill all things' - which He does still.
