ABSTRACT

New Regionalism suggests that in a world of globalizing economies, markets and politics, the region is the appropriate level to assess and respond to challenges to economic growth and prosperity. The experience of the City of Onkaparinga Regional Export Extension Service (REES) demonstrates that an export enhancement program delivered at local or regional level can contribute to a range of positive impacts and outcomes. The REES is a regionally-based model initiated by local governments looking to provide tailored and flexible solutions to their business sectors. The model aims to foster the development of an export culture among small and medium enterprises, build knowledge and skills among businesses to help them to overcome obstacles to exporting. It also offers opportunities for businesses to build linkages with other agencies and businesses both within, and external to, the region. Through the information sessions, businesses found out about assistance available through the South Australian Government to undertake promotional activities interstate.
