ABSTRACT

This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the key concepts discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book provides interesting findings on antecedents and consequences of job insecurity. It contains information on the consequences of job insecurity for individuals and the organisation. The book focuses on the relationship between job insecurity and attitudes towards unions. It discusses the question whether unions can mitigate the negative consequences of job insecurity (and downsizing). An analysis of the possible impact of job insecurity on union membership figures is rather important for unions too, because membership constitutes the cornerstone of their power in mobilizing workers and in negotiations with employers and governments. The book shows research results on the three other forms of union participation: voting in union elections, participation in actions and becoming a union activist. The finding that job insecurity is associated with specific union attitudes has important consequences for union practice.
