ABSTRACT

This chapter considers physical aspects — that is the design — of 'home'. It discusses the importance of analyzing the meaning of use of space in exploring the meaning of the design of 'home', and presents the relationship between 'lifestyles and associated values and norms' and 'the use and design of domestic space' in Britain from a historical perspective. The chapter explores what the design of contemporary British homes may mean through the analysis of the way in which people use their domestic space, reporting on the progress of an on-going survey with those who are on a 'shared ownership' scheme. The formality rituals have had a significant impact on the way domestic space is used — namely, the perception of 'front' and 'back' regions of the house. Houses in Britain have traditionally had a demarcation between 'front' and 'back' regions.
