ABSTRACT

This chapter explores the changes through an analysis of Norwegian professional men's football. It begins with a discussion of approaches to understanding globalisation and local responses, and also explores these responses to globalisation in the context of professional football clubs in Norway. The chapter examines how the processes of globalisation are met by responses at the national and local levels. It discusses whether the clubs become internationalised with a purely business form of organisation or if they develop more hybrid forms using this approach. The chapter argues that, although organisational practices of Norwegian professional football are developing towards homogenisation, the local flavour remains noticeably prominent. Within the literature on globalisation and local response, there is a school of thought that argues that globalisation and commercialisation lead to a homogeneous form of organisation across territories. A striking feature of modern football, underlining the increased international influence at club level, is the increased mobility of football players.
