ABSTRACT

Chad, without its oil, would also be dramatically different from what it is today. Without oil, Chad, or at least its citizens, would certainly be no poorer than they are today. Nor would it have reached the top of Transparency International’s ranking of the world’s most corrupt countries, albeit with a little encouragement from the world’s largest oil major (ExxonMobil) and the World Bank, along with a wink and a nod from its former colonizing power, France. Like Algeria, it would now almost certainly be experiencing less internal conflict, rebellion and death.
