ABSTRACT

Drought is considered to be one of the greatest natural disasters. In Bulgaria, severe droughts have become a major climatic disaster, adversely affecting the country's needed agricultural products and water supplies. Drought is usually the most important constraint limiting crop production in the rain-fed areas in the country. Drought conditions occurred mainly in August and September, two months that normally mark the peak of the dry season in Bulgaria. The drought expanded in August, with continuous precipitation deficit and high air temperatures, which slowed the growth of most crops. An investigation of the development and dynamic reaction to the drought stress in 1993 was also done using a visual assessment and a detailed analysis of crop changes and the formation of reproductive organs. The potential impact of global warming on agricultural crop growth, development, and yield formation was also assessed.
