ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the potential for peace and stability between Greece and Turkey, between whom security concerns remain the main source of conflict in the 21st Century. It starts with a discussion of the fundamental sources of conflict and specific issues between the two countries. The chapter argues that there has been an increase in instability and the potential for war at the beginning of 21st Century. It discusses the developments that led to this increase, such as the shift in the balance of power in favour of Turkey, the disintegration of the Soviet Union, the shift in the United States' interests from Europe to the Middle East, and other important factors. In coping with potential security threats that may originate from Iran, Iraq and Syria, the shift in US interests from Europe to the Middle East has been instrumental for Turkey.
