Editorial Introduction

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book presents the pattern and objectives of the workshop: in summary, a recognition of the European agenda, an introduction to Asian perspectives and experiences. It focuses on the future of care, particularly in the context of the decline in the incidence and contribution of the extended family system. The book details the main features of the Central Provident Fund. It explores the appropriate role of the state with respect to pensions has been a matter of heated debate for some years. The book argues that the dominance of filial piety, ideologically and practically, has actively hampered the development of social welfare-based approaches. In this sense, Korean society has only recently begun to address issues of social concern in terms other than of family responsibility.
