ABSTRACT

This chapter argues that new forms of activism, that are evidence-based and engage multiple partners, while led and controlled by persons with disabilities are emerging and are effective in shifting the power, knowledge balance and advancement of disability rights. Disability Rights Promotion International (DRPI) is a collaborative project working to establish a holistic, participatory system to monitor the human rights of persons with disabilities worldwide against the standards of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and other international human rights instruments. Through building capacity to collect and report on information, DRPI ensures that a holistic view of the human rights situation of persons with disabilities is undertaken and that measures taken by disability organisations, governments and other actors to improve this situation, are fully informed. Evidence-based DRPI monitoring is grounded in the understanding that thorough and accurate data will reveal the extent of discrimination faced by persons with disabilities on a daily basis.
