ABSTRACT

Judo is sometimes referred to as applied biomechanics, and the techniques of judo are based on biomechanical principles. The concepts of balance, pivot points, torque, and dynamic equilibrium, are understood by judoka, but often through other terminology. This chapter will take the common approaches to Sport Biomechanics and explain the main concepts in the context of judo. Such an approach will explain some of the main technical principles found in the Kodokan Gokyo for throwing techniques and will also cover the technical principles found in grappling techniques. Relevant examples are selected from each of the five recognised types of nage-waza, and three types of katamewaza, to ensure breadth of coverage of the techniques currently recognised within Kodokan judo.
