ABSTRACT

Rather than repeating a standard narrative of the history of judo, which is found in many texts, this chapter draws on academic sources to present a depth of analysis on the development of judo, and particularly the development of judo scientific and research activities. It is structured in three sections: early history; Jigoro Kano; and modern judo and internationalisation. The early history section outlines the legend of Takemikazuchi, sumai, kumi-uchi, the introduction of the musket, the Buke Shohatto, and the roku bugei. The section on Jigoro Kano identifies some key influences on the development of judo research. The section on modern judo and internationalisation considers the spread of judo globally and the development of international organisations. The chapter demonstrates that science and research has been an integral part of judo since its inception.
