ABSTRACT

With the vast variety of hair care products available on the market, it may be challenging for dermatologists and other providers to recommend specific regimens to fulfill each patient’s hair care needs. Much of the challenge comes from the fact that hair care is a personal issue based on one’s hair texture, desired cosmetic look, styling preferences, previous hair care history, and presence of hair or scalp disorders. Ultimately, hair care products are used for treatment and cosmetic purposes. Thus, the dermatologist’s knowledge of hair care products should include an understanding of available cosmetic resources to better treat hair and scalp conditions and fulfill patients’ expectations. This chapter utilizes the information presented in previous chapters to reinforce understanding and help dermatologists and others treating patients with hair diseases design treatment plans for their patients based on their patients’ unique hair characteristics and hair history. Included are specific cases to help guide the discussion.
