ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a framework for the understanding and application of Biophilic Design, exploring the concept of biophilia as an inherent inclination to affiliate with nature, the nonhuman environment, essential to human health, fitness and well-being. It considers how the prevailing paradigm regarding design of the modern built environment has encouraged environmental degradation and separation from nature identifying the ecological and ethical imperative of Biophilic Design as a remedial response to the stressful impacts of city life. It explores the Principles and practices of Biophilic Design, its application and Attributes, considering the different Experiences of Nature, Space And Place embodied in the design concepts.
