ABSTRACT

Nanoemulsion can be defined as emulsion having droplet sizes with “nano” range. Both hydrophilic and lipophilic drugs can be used in nanoemulsion. It protects the drug from hydrolysis and oxidation due to encapsulation in oil droplet. It also provides taste masking. Different characterization parameters for nanoemulsion include transmission microscopy, nanoemulsion droplet size analysis, consistency determination, index of refraction, in vitro skin permeation studies, skin irritation check, in vivo efficacy study, thermodynamic stability studies, and surface characteristics. This chapter covers different applications, advantages, disadvantages, and methods of preparation of nanoemulsion. The future scopes of nanoemulsion are also discussed in this chapter.
