ABSTRACT

This chapter covers the typical challenges and strategies for recruiting, mentoring, and supporting SHES faculty, and how these challenges need to be reflected in promotion and tenure considerations. Challenges include the need for SHES faculty to work harder, advance sustainability solutions as well as advance knowledge, require engagement of sustainability stakeholders, and face limited research funding opportunities. SHES faculty participation may extend beyond the departmental level to other departments as well as cross college issues. Supradisciplinary faculty recruiting may pose specific clarity issues and faculty mentoring may not be the same as for disciplinary faculty. Other issues include supradisciplinary research, scholarship, and research credit for promotion and tenure. Institutional adjustment strategies are discussed to better support SHES faculty, with attention paid to the size and type of institution as well as problems that can arise when SHES faculty face a more discipline-based promotion and tenure system. The chapter appendix includes “Frequently Asked Questions” about SHES tenure cases.
