ABSTRACT

This chapter examines one particular type of material, booklets distributed free through health service clinics. These booklets are an important source of advice to parents. The chapter examines by a simpler principle, that of one Area Health Authority's Health Education Unit's distribution pattern for 1978. The attention given to parent education in the Court Report on the Child Health Services may well have contributed to professional enthusiasm for the production and the distribution of literature on child care. The publication of increasing numbers of child care leaflets and baby books, by the development of non-academic short courses for parents by the Open University and by various experiments in adapting the course material for a wider audience. Unfortunately the course material is not currently available for free distribution and some of the existing booklets would have to change their approach radically to incorporate information of this sort.
