ABSTRACT

With the UN adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), changes are ongoing in the field of development cooperation. European countries and Japan have followed the OECD’s Development Assistance Committee (DAC) standards, although European donors had more “soft aid” financed by grants and Japan had a heavy emphasis on infrastructure. While the Europeans used to dominate agenda setting, there now seems to be a definite turn towards the Japanese development cooperation model. This chapter analyses EU and Japan development policies as well as the cooperation between the two. It also researches Chinese and US influences on global development cooperation.
