ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines the efforts of authorities in Europe and US to re-establish the rule of law and respect for human rights through the investigation of the programme and its outcomes. It explains the developments in delivering accountability and establishing the truth. The book focuses on the findings and the implications of the Feinstein Report. It discusses the issue of achieving accountability, and focuses on five European states: Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, and the United Kingdom. The book explores how rule of law was subverted as it was–but also what must be done to overturn this state of affairs. It explains the issue of whether the International Criminal Court will address the crimes carried out under the extraordinary rendition programme. The book also explores the possibility of pursuing a case against US citizens on the territory of Afghanistan or another State Party.
