ABSTRACT

The current transport system, based mostly on road traffic and the use of private vehicles, impacts the environment, the health and the economy. To overcome these, it is necessary to move towards sustainable models of mobility. These can be achieved by adopting an appropriate and strategic land-use planning approach at the urban scale.

The aim of the paper is to verify the transferability of the criteria identified in the European project PAES (“Housing Policy for Sustainable Construction”, financed by “Erasmus+” Programme) to small and medium-sized Calabrian cities. The PAES project studied the good practices in promoting efficient land use models. These aimed at linking sustainable mobility goals with territorial modelling and public space enjoyment goals.

In order to verify the application of these criteria, the single city is assimilated to “neighbourhood” dimension and a new governance model based on sharing the investments and the services is assumed.
