ABSTRACT

The paper will analyse the interest over public transport stops (PTS) in the scientific debate, examining the approaches to this issue. Three main spheres of the scientific debate that express some interest on this issue will be explored: debate on modal choice (transportation engineering, territorial planning); debate on public spaces, urban design, landscape design; manuals and guidelines on the design of public transport stops. Furthermore, the paper will focus on some realised projects: some interesting realisations show that conceiving PTS as urban places is possible. Combining the scientific debate with the design proposals and realised projects, the paper will define some design criteria and directions for the development of an approach to the design of PTS based on liveability, on quality and on the harmony of PTS with the urban context in which they are inserted.
