ABSTRACT

The aim of this paper is to revitalize and renovate historic centres through the identification of new soft mobility solutions for tourists and residents.

Old town centres face several problems that affect the quality of life, many of them are a result of the inability of existing infrastructure to cope with the transportation needs of the population.

The historic centre of Genoa is characterized by a labyrinth of ancient narrow streets, medieval and renaissance palaces. Residents and tourists should move easily in a sustainable way, but it has also some negative aspects: there are many architectonical barriers, security problems and blight zoned. This paper identifies specific practices to improve the quality of life and the attractiveness for tourists and residents of the historic centre of Genoa improving current mobility solutions. Soft mobility represents the best solution for this area, and the research defines or improves pedestrian zones and bike paths.
