ABSTRACT

The increase of the number of accidents is partly due to inadequacy of cycling infrastructures. The aim of this study is to deepen by what means a safe and high-quality bike path can be realized. Different discomforts for the users can been noted, especially regarding bike paths that usually are not enough visible or separated from the traffic lane.

A new concrete kerb has been designed to separate the cycle path from the vehicular passage, reducing the risk of injury. Its shape and size have been investigated in order to find the correct solution that provides a better protection: the Italian regulation has no indication about the shape, dimensions and material but it gives just indications about the width. To fill this gap, an innovative “illuminating concrete” will be used with the aim to increase the visibility of the track.
