ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book discusses the emergent identities; how they are produced in the current conjuncture, and how they extend or complicate the identity politics of earlier moments. It explores the ways in which mediated feminine and feminist identities are articulated, performed, and challenged across a number of popular media industries, texts, and genres. The chapter examines Amy Schumer's "popular feminism" and theorizes the political potential inherent in the changing ways audiences use satirical television in an era of television connectivity. It highlights the ways in which feminist identities and politics are mobilized to challenge postfeminist sensibilities, yet can simultaneously reinforce privilege around other identities including race and class. The chapter also examines the creative practices of female musicians turned fashion designers. It also explores how the fashion industry offers opportunities for feminine and feminist identity exploration within the constraints of neoliberal capitalism.
