ABSTRACT

Valve-sparing aortic root replacement (VSRR) was described as a new surgical procedure in the 1980s by Sir Magdi Yacoub. He described a case series of 10 patients and introduced the concept of remodeling the aortic root. In the 1990s Christopher Feindel and Tirone David presented their technique of reimplantation of the aortic root in a polyester tube graft. This involved reimplantation of the aortic root while preserving the aortic valve in patients with aortic root aneurysm and aortic insufficiency. Subsequently, various modifications to the reimplantation and remodeling techniques have been performed and are now utilized by multiple cardiac surgical programs around the world. This is a very attractive operation in young patients with a life expectancy greater than 15 years where aortic valve repair can be a durable option.
