ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a description of the race and class divides in the Atlanta metropolitan area and how efforts through planning to mitigate them with project-driven growth have either improved relations between groups or reinforced social inequality. It discusses that the challenges of balancing transformative projects against the need to manage inclusive development that did not unfairly displace incumbent communities has not always been possible nor a priority. There is perhaps no feature of the Atlanta metropolitan area more conspicuous than the politics and geography of race. The principle threatens business-as-usual practices and calls for a more thoughtful, inclusive, and comprehensive approach for development projects. Atlanta's best hope for adapting the London model to apply to the Falcons' stadium, as well as other large scale developments, lies in a collaboration among all who have stepped up to make equity in the outcome an imperative.
