ABSTRACT

The fact that modern streetcars are returning to the streets of Atlanta can be traced back to neighborhood-oriented land-use and transportation planning processes in Downtown and Midtown that resulted in recommendations that the core of the city needed "last-mile" transit connections. The Atlanta Regional Commission (ARC), through its Livable Communities Initiative planning and transportation infrastructure program, has been a key funding partner for the Atlanta Streetcar. Since funding was identified for the Atlanta Streetcar, Atlanta BeltLine, Inc., as an affiliate of the City of Atlanta, has taken the lead in planning and analyzing expansions of the city's streetcar network between the Atlanta BeltLine corridor and the Atlanta Streetcar alignment. The City of Atlanta has led the effort to build the Atlanta Streetcar and will own the assets of the system. One key funding-related recommendation of the Peachtree Corridor Taskforce was the creation of a special property tax assessment district along the transit route to raise local.
