ABSTRACT

The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport defines that bedrock standard. With over 7.8 million passengers per month in 2013, it is the busiest airport in the world. The Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport Competition Plan was recommended, and it was approved by Mayor Bill Campbell and the Atlanta City Council on January 3, 2000. Mayor Bill Campbell empowered the airport leadership to prepare the airport for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games and to complete a master plan for the airport's future operations. The local business community believed the fifth runway was the key to future economic development in the region. Hartsfield-Jackson is the latest of many iterations in Atlanta's history as an airport hub. The airport's plans were and are a practical affair that reflects the city's needs and aspirations, and in some ways even leads them. The city's political leadership is chiefly responsible for Atlanta becoming the world's busiest airport.
