ABSTRACT

In this article Campbell examines the compatibility of sustainable development with traditional planning values. In his “the planner’s triangle” model he explores the tensions and contradictions between the goals of economic vitality and environmental protection. This clash makes it difficult to actually apply the “vague idealism” of sustainable development to real-world planning issues. Campbell explores the applicability of the concept as it exists, and looks into the possibilities of redefining sustainability. He then discusses future procedural and substantive planning challenges for planners in resolving the economic-environmental conflicts and in navigating the planner’s triangle.
