ABSTRACT

This chapter gives an overview of health policies and politics in Nepal. It describes some pertinent socio-economic conditions related to health, and offers specific suggestions for further developments within the health system. It relates the need for changes to the 2007 Interim Constitution’s established right of all Nepali citizens to free basic health services, a clean environment, access to education, and means for a fair livelihood. The current situation within different societal sectors is presented, followed by suggestions for policy initiatives that can affect the distribution of health facilities and medical equipment, as well as the health status of different socio-economic groups and their access to health services.
