ABSTRACT

In all human societies food plays many roles, and is deeply embedded in the social, religious and economic aspects of everyday life. Food also carries with it a range of symbolic meanings that express relationships between people, deities, and the natural environment. The classification of food into hot and cold, easy to digest and hard to digest, provide the explanatory models of local beliefs and practices of the overall cultural pattern of the community. Such categories lead into beneficial, harmless, or dangerous directions.
