ABSTRACT

Communication is about exchanging ideas, information, and knowledge. It is also about transferring new ideas, information, and knowledge from people who know to people who do not know. The chapter describes three paradigms for development (modernization, dependency, participatory), each implying a specific communication model. These communication aspects are applied to health communication between people and health care providers. Focus is given on the importance of cultural factors for effective health communication. This is illustrated with an overview of the terms and expressions that women in five different ethnic groups in Nepal use to describe acute respiratory infections and illnesses among children.
