ABSTRACT

To examine the obstacles to and prospects for the advancement of an indigenous sourced International Relations (IR) theory, this chapter traces the trajectory of European studies in Thailand since the Cold War. It first examines the boundaries of the discipline in Thailand and questions why European studies has been placed under the rubric of IR rather than becoming a discipline in its own right. It then compares European studies in Thailand with other national academic contexts to highlight the similarities and differences shared between European studies in the Western and non-Western worlds. Finally, the chapter surveys the key scholars of European studies in Thailand and their work in search of any possible theoretical contributions to Thai IR.
