ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses several goals of happiness and wellbeing in the context of their relationship with the size of countries, measured by population. It focuses on the well-established goals of per capita incomes, health, education and 'life satisfaction' as well as extending the analysis to a consideration of good governance and institutional quality. The chapter discusses the size distribution of sovereign states in the world economy and their stratification into quartiles according to population. It analyses the size distribution of states across World Bank income categories according to 2013 World Bank gross national income per capita income data. Relatively smaller countries, irrespective of the definition of size, therefore have an almost insignificant share of the global population. The World Bank's Worldwide Governance Indicators are arguably the most comprehensive statistical measures of governance in terms of the variety of component indicators. The chapter on draws some conclusions regarding the relationship between country size and these different indicators of wellbeing.
