ABSTRACT

Biologically inspired techniques offer novel ways of making Network on Chip (NoC) fault tolerant. The improved bio-inspired algorithm is implemented using guaranteed throughput (GT) communication setup by time division multiplexing (TDM). This chapter discusses a bio-inspired NoC algorithm using a GT connection. Some of the NoC architectures provide GT and best effort (BE) services while others provide only GT and BE communication mechanisms. Heterogeneous Network on Chip simulator is an open source simulator providing heterogeneous, multiple topologies, synchronous, and asynchronous NoC support. In GT based NoC there is a slight change in the packet format of "synap" and "flit" as compared to the BE services, due to the addition of queue and slot numbers. The 100% TDM connection is efficiently utilizing 55.75% of the bandwidth of the NoC as compared to average TDM base connections. TDM connections help divide the bandwidth of interconnect among multiple connections using slots.
