ABSTRACT

The fabric samples bamboo woven and bamboo knitted were finished with the prepared charcoal micro-capsules according to the following recipe. About 1 L solution containing 700 g of micro-capsules was used to finish one

meter of fabric. A 5% emulsion binder was used as cross-linking agent. The fabric was kept immersed in the solution (ML ratio – 1:20) for 30 minutes at 50ºC in water bath. After finishing, the fabric was removed, squeezed and dried at 80ºC in the oven for 5 minutes and then cured at 120ºC for 2 minutes.

The anti-bacterial activities of the finished fabrics bamboo woven and bamboo knitted were tested according to Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli. Nutrient agar plates were prepared by pouring 15 ml of media into sterile Petri dishes. The plates were allowed to solidify for 5 minutes and 0.1% inoculum was swabbed uniformly and allowed to dry for 5 minutes. The finished fabric with the diameter of 2.0 ± 0.1 cm was placed on the surface of medium and the plates were kept for incubation at 37ºC for 24 hour. At the end of incubation, the zone of inhibition formed around the fabric was measured in millimetres and recorded (Table 12.1).
