ABSTRACT

The modern lecture-based classroom and teaching, as we know them today, have only recently become pervasive. In fact, there are many other historical modes of education including apprenticeship, mutual instruction, and hands-on work, some of which have begun to come back into vogue. In this chapter, Sarma describes the history of these methods, the cognitive underpinnings of learning, and the opportunities learning engineering affords. Sarma presents online as a new “instrument in the orchestra,” one which enables entirely new combinations of educational experiences. This chapter is based on a lecture given by Sarma at the LearnLaunch conference in 2018.
