ABSTRACT

This article examines nine cases of displacement caused by development in the states of Gujarat, Jharkhand, Kerala and the national capital territory of Delhi. They reveal failed regulation, inadequate enforcement of the law and harm to communities that extend to other cases elsewhere in India. They show that land acquisitions have pushed people aside with little regard for their rights or needs for decades. They are the result of government indifference; a failure to monitor the impacts of projects on human rights and to establish accountability mechanisms to address them.
