ABSTRACT

Drawing upon the experiences of families evicted for infrastructure development from three different parts of Kochi city, namely Thevara, Bolgatty and Vypeen, this chapter focuses on the varied nature of their struggles and the differences in compensation provided to them. The chapter uses these three case studies purposely, as the numbers of people evicted were few and far between when compared to other mega projects in Kochi and the compensation provided to them differed across and within cases. The modes of struggles exemplify the agency of the evicted in dealing with the civic authorities demanding compensation despite the troubles that they encountered during the process of eviction and in rebuilding their lives elsewhere.
