ABSTRACT
In this chapter, the author investigates the reasons behind the general failure to recognize Martin’s prominent role in paving the way for the new understanding of secularization as a contingent and non-linear historical process. Comparing his approach to Charles Taylor’s take on the issue, the author comes to the conclusion that Martin’s deep-seated mistrust of Grand Narratives has unnecessarily shrunk the explanatory potential of its theoretical breakthrough.
