ABSTRACT
The gaze of the Bengali intellectual in the late 19th–early 20th century on Japan has been analysed from the essays and writings in the contemporary Bengali periodicals. It is my intention to show how this gaze was influenced by the ideas of universalism and nationalism prevailing in the country and how it evolved, changed, and interfaced with Asian history and culture.
